at a Provisional Joint Conference on the 5th. that a Pro-
visional Committee for the temporary control of the British
Concussion at Hankow, should be organized, and 5 members
were appointed.
On the 5th. the Committee took over the
control of the British Concession.
Chen lwen ( 羣 陳)
was still retained in the British Police Headquarters to
take charge of all matters concerning the soldiers and
police sent to maintain order in the British Concussion;
the Public Puce pure...u, the 2 Special Districts and the
Model District had euch sunt 20 constables to be on duty
at the various posts in turn. Instructions were also given
to the Public Zo CU Sureau to send 40 men of the Po Un Tui
(Peace Maintenance Corps), the Generul Labour Association
to send 300 pickets and the City Garrison the 29th. Detach-
ment to patrol the different districts. Now order has been
restored in the British Concession, and the 300 pickets wer
all withdrawn on the 7th. But the British residents were
still suspicious and afraid to return to their ordinary
peaceful occup.tions. Eugene Chen (ERR) the Folign
Minister, called on the British Consul-General at 6 p.m. ΟΥ
the 6th., and astured him that the activity of the Chinese
proletariat was only directed against the brutality of the
British marines for their butchery of the populace and that
they felt no hostility against the British residents, and
therefore there was no need for these to be alarmed. Truc
the General Labour Union had thre..tened a general strikc
against the British, out their activities were dependent on
curt in definite rusolutions which they had adopted and no
strike would be enforced without good reason. The adminis...
tration of the British Concession had been taken over by
the National Government. As for no otiations regarding the
recent tragic events the Government took its stand upon
the demands put forward by the populace.
